Hugh MacDiarmid by Paul Sutherland
With all his global hype
it's two valleys westward
to the poet's last home.
Brownsbank views hold
kind remembrance of this
modern, dedicated man
each hill's fall and glide
whatever rant or politics.
Perhaps he forgot hatreds
as snow turned to cherry
blossoms in wall-guarded
garden, or the fire's ember
or a loving hand reposing
on his wrist comforted him
beyond his old extremes
to that point of praise
from where it all began.
Paul Sutherland, orignally from Canada, is a widely published poet. He lives in Lincolnshire and edits the literary magazine, The Dream Catcher.
